The Finished Cabin

Justin and his wife run this cabin as an Airbnb on their property in the Huon Valley, south of Hobart. The brief was a cabin that could earn its keep from the day it opened and still look like it belonged in a Tasmanian farming valley. It is a compact single-gable form with a steep pitch, clad and roofed in COLORBOND® steel in Monument® — a deep charcoal that reads almost black in shadow and softens to grey in full sun. Vertical corrugated sheeting on the gable end, horizontal along the side wall, with black-framed glazing running the length of the northern side and a sliding door onto a timber deck. The whole cabin sits up on galvanised steel stumps on individual concrete footings rather than a slab. On a paddock that falls away gently that is the cheaper and less invasive way to build. There is no cut and fill, no scar in the ground, and the floor comes out dead level regardless of what the site is doing underneath it. Monument against the old farm sheds and the water tanks is what stops it looking like a new build dropped onto the paddock — it recedes into the hillside instead of fighting it.
