Double A-Frame Home Designs Australia

What Is a Double A-Frame Home?

A double A-frame home combines two connected A-frame structures to create a larger living space with the dramatic rooflines and cathedral ceilings that make A-frames iconic. Instead of the single triangular volume of a traditional A-frame, a double design joins two A-frame sections — typically at right angles or in parallel — giving you separate living and sleeping zones under distinct peaked roofs.

The double A-frame layout solves the biggest limitation of single A-frames: usable floor space. A standard A-frame loses floor area to the sloping walls, especially in the upstairs loft. By connecting two A-frame volumes, you get the full floor area of both structures plus the architectural drama of intersecting rooflines.

Double A-Frame Floor Plan Layouts

The most common double A-frame configurations are the T-shape, the L-shape, and the parallel arrangement. In the T-shape, one A-frame forms the main living area (kitchen, dining, lounge) and the second A-frame extends perpendicular to form the bedroom wing. This creates a natural separation between living and sleeping spaces.

The L-shape is similar but offsets the second A-frame to create a sheltered courtyard or outdoor living area in the corner. This works particularly well on rural blocks where you want to capture views in two directions.

The parallel layout places two A-frames side by side, connected by a flat-roofed link section. The link becomes the hallway, bathroom or utility zone. This arrangement gives you the widest combined floor area and works on narrower blocks.

Why Steel Frame for Double A-Frames?

Double A-frame homes have complex structural requirements at the junction point where the two roof systems meet. Steel framing handles this far better than timber because TRUECORE steel sections can be precisely engineered for the connection loads, valley beam spans and wind uplift forces at the intersection.

Our steel frame A-frame kits include all structural engineering for the junction — connection brackets, valley beams, and tie-down systems designed for your specific site wind classification. The steel frames arrive flat-packed and bolt together on site. Most double A-frame kits can be erected in 4-6 days.

Double A-Frame Kit Home Pricing

A double A-frame steel frame kit for a 2+1 bedroom design (approximately 120-150m² combined floor area) is priced on request. Larger 3+2 bedroom designs with loft spaces in both A-frame sections are also quoted on request.

Total build costs including slab, cladding, plumbing, electrical and internal finishes typically fall between $180,000 and $350,000 depending on size, site conditions and finish level. Owner builders save 20-40% by managing trades directly.

Our double A-frame kits include TRUECORE steel wall frames and roof trusses for both A-frame sections, the connection structure between sections, subfloor system, all connections and fasteners, plus full structural engineering and certification for your building permit. Windows, roofing, cladding and insulation are quoted separately.
